"Real Leather" made by yeast
#1
There is a new process out there that uses yeast to produce sheets of what is essentially leather or at least a product that can be used to replace leather.  This would be a clean and safe product. It would avoid animal cruelty. It would hopefully be environmentally friendly.

This could be the beginning of change in the fashion industry and in the way we manufacture many things that use leather.
Right now they are producing something like cow hide. What if the could produce alligator skin and ostrich skin. This yeast grown skin can be grown to set sizes and shapes. It wouldn't have to kept alive and fed for years before slaughter like real animals skins.
This could be the end of cruel alligator and ostrich farms.

It is going to be cheaper to grow "leather" than to raise animals for their skins. If it is a cheaper manufacturing process then it will be the end of farms that raise animals for their skins. All the protesting about animal cruelty and raising public awareness will not accomplish as much as a cheaper way to get the skins that people want.

It is the right thing for the wrong reason, but if it ends animal cruelty we should count it as a victory.
