Sea turtle gender effected by climate change
#1
Every day there seem to be new problems caused by climate change. This time it is turtle gender. Many reptiles develop in the egg into a male or a female depending on the temperature. The higher the incubation temperature the higher the percentage of females.
Right now Green Sea Turtle eggs incubating on Australian beaches are developing into females. In the hottest areas they number of females is over 99%. This means there could be a shortage of breeding males in years to come.

This is just another example of how we are messing up the planet by changing the climate.
Long term we need to reverse climate change or at least prevent it from getting worse.

For right now, surely we can shade the nests and help keep a gender balance. We already watch turtle nests and in some places protect them. Special nets could be used to reflect the sun's heat back and keep the sands cooler.
Of course we should not be killing adult male sea turtles. We shouldn't be killing any sea turtles.

We have created this problem so yet again we have a responsibility to do something to fix it.
