VW animal testing scandal
#1
Volkswagen has been caught in an animal testing scandal. The tests involved deliberately exposing monkeys to the fumes of diesel engines for hours on end.

It is not even clear what they were trying to prove with the tests. The monkeys suffered for nothing.
Now that it has become public Volkswagen is working to distance itself from the animal study.

They can distance themselves now and they can fire people that were responsible. However, they should have been aware of what was being done in their name. There should have been some oversight of any testing that was done. It shouldn't have come as a surprize that monkeys were used to test their cars. They had a responsibility to know what was being done.
I didn't know, is not much of an excuse when you are responsible for the running of the company.

I hope there are some consequences for this.

I have little doubt that the car companies, saddled with lots of diesel cars which are no longer easy to sell because of pollution fears and increased fuel tax, funded the research with their eyes open. They wanted something tangible, a report, which would say something like, "No worries! The fumes are safe!"

For me, it is equally disturbing that a university was so keen for money that it agreed to do such work - and worse, that a so-called ethics committee approved it! See http://www.dw.com/en/german-university-h...a-42353001

The university must have been paid very well for the study it did. That is the only reason that makes sense for their involvement.
I have to wonder about the ethics committee however. I can see no reason why they would okay a study on humans and monkeys that had no possible medical benefits.

Those humans and animals that were exposed showed no immediate health issues. However there could be long  term consequences that won't develop for years. Also there in no way of knowing what long term exposure to the fumes would do to the body.

I assume the human test subjects were paid for their participation. I wonder what was done to the monkeys.

I found some more articles.

So not only was the research unethical, it was rigged.

Also the monkeys were harmed by the experiment.

This just keeps getting worse and worse. They have been rigging the cars for years so they can pass emission tests. That doesn't help the environment that is suffering from pollution.
