The shelter is for people fleeing domestic violence, but it is being built to accommodate their pets as well. This is a recognition of the threat to animals in a domestic violence situation. It also recognizes the reluctance of people to leave their pets behind. They put themselves at risk by staying because they fear to leave their pets. Having a place they can go and bring there pets will make the decision to leave much easier.

This is an idea that is long overdue. Lives can be healed sooner if the pets are part of the healing. The ability to leave with the pets and seek safety sooner will possibly save lives. It will certainly save injuries. I hope this is the first of many such shelters to be built.
