Why are Ontario Cormorants on the shoot to kill list
#1
After years of decline the Cormorants have recovered and their numbers are stable. It looked like they might survive.
Now the current provincial government is set to declare them a game bird and allow hunters to shoot them.
The Cormorant is not eaten so the bodies will just be discarded. So they are hardly a game bird.
Each hunter is allowed 50 birds a day from March 15 to Dec 31, that is 13,750 birds per hunter per year.
That is also their breeding season. I think we can expect their numbers to decline sharply.

Why?
Why hate one bird so much. They really don't compete with us for food or anything else. They just want to live in peace like any other species.  Knowing what we do about the environment and biodiversity, why would we risk destroying one species like this.
Even if you don't like the bird, it is part of Ontario's natural ecosystem. It is meant to be here and destroying them could have consequences we can't foresee.

We know hunters are going to take advantage of this. They could be decent and refuse to kill a bird they can't eat, but when have hunters ever been decent.  Life in Ontario just got a little bit uglier under our current provincial government.

What is wrong with people we encroach on their habitat and when they start to annoy everyone we kill them really?
It's o.k. there won't be any living creatures around one day and everyone will be saying what did we do wrong.

Sadly a lot of the governments are supporting killing like this. The birds are not really a problem. People just think they are a problem because they are around.  The world would be pretty grim without animals. If we keep it up the only thing left will be cockerel roaches. They are indestructible and they will outlive us as a species.
