New Canada Food Guide emphasizes plant based diet
#1
The long awaited new Canada Food Guide is out and it contains some surprizing, but refreshing changes. After years of recommending a steady diet of meat and dairy products with some fruits, grains and vegetables, the guide changes direction.
It recommends a diet high in fruits and vegetables. Meat and dairy are now listed as protein sources and it is recommended that a person eat alternative protein sources some of the time. A heavy meat diet is not recommended.

The new guide allows for the possibility of a vegetarian or vegan diet. They both fit within the guidelines and are encouraged over a heavy meat diet. This is a healthier way of eating than what has been recommended for many years.

This also spares a lot of animal lives. If people learn to eat a diet that contains less meat, the demand for animal products will decrease. It doesn't stop the whole factory farming system or the abuse of animals, but it does reduce it. As we become less dependent on meat in our diet then we are more able to question how that meat was produced. It is a shift in a good direction.

It is also more environmentally sound. The earth cannot sustain the number of animals that are farmed for meat. It is to big a drain on the system and the waste produced is unmanageable.

Changing a food guide is a little thing, but it shows a whole change of thinking. I am hopeful that this will bring a whole change in how we live.
