Never Release a Balloon!!! They Kill Animals!!!
#1
Balloons that are released hurt wildlife. Whether they are on the land or the water, wildlife suffers.

I found a video of sea turtle rescue by responsible young men. They saw the turtle in trouble and they worked to free him from the balloon and save his life.

A little further research gave me this article.

This is a serious problem. I think marine animals are impacted the most because most garbage ends up in the ocean.
Other wildlife suffers too though. Do you really need to release a balloon? Why do you need to release a balloon?

The article lists alternatives to releasing balloons. I like the plant a tree idea. Releasing bubbles is good. Releasing flower seeds that will blow on the wind would be pretty. There are so many good ways to have celebrations. Releasing animal killing balloons is not one of them.

Thank you for this post Catherine. I hope someone will read it and think twice about their birthday balloon. The Chinese lanterns are another problem. Yes they look beautiful when flying up, but then they come down, usually in a field with livestock, and the wires in them are dangerous to animals.

Many a time I have had to untangle a balloon from a hedge or pick it up out of a field. Usually it says Happy Birthday or Happy 50th anniversary....or some such thing. But once it's flown everyone forgets about its fate.

I am not surprised this has become a major problem.

Ooops....that was funny. I just posted the words happy-birthday-balloon and a huge balloon came up. Well I suppose it illustrates the point.

It is both funny and makes a point at the same time.

Why do we need to release anything artificial. I planted trees on my birthday. They are still there for me to look at.
If people need to release something it could be seeds or even flower petals. There must be some natural things we can do that don't harm the environment.

I would think anything with string or wire is dangerous. It could entangle any kind of creature or even entangle a tree and cause harm. I am glad you are able to remove balloons and wires. I shall have to watch out for dangers like that. I already watch out for plastic rings that can hurt wildlife.
