Warning about toxic blue green algae and dogs
#1
In the summer under certain conditions fresh water lakes will develop algal blooms. These are big mats of algae.
Sometimes they are on the surface, but often they are hidden in what appear to be clean waters.
Dogs who swim in  the waters can die within minutes if they ingest the toxins.

I feel for all the dog owners who did not know the dangers and saw their dogs die suddenly after a fun swim in a lake.
Once the toxin is ingested survival is unlikely. All a dog owner can do is keep their dog away from water they are not sure of. Now that the problem is known, signs can be posted. For a number of dog owners and their dogs it is too late.

Nothing will bring back the dogs that were lost, but at least by warning people we can hope that no more dogs will be lost.
I knew about the algae, but I had no idea that it is so toxic.  I am shocked by how toxic it is.

Thank you for posting this warning Catherine. Yes it is very toxic.
Beaches in the Gulf Coast were closed a little while ago because of blue-green algae. It is also toxic for humans (swimmers and surfers.)

It has been bad along the gulf coast. Right now parts of the great lakes are in trouble.  Lake Erie is having a serious algae problem. It is bad enough that it can be seen from space.

It is a big enough problem to warrant a provincial web page.  Algal blooms are reportable and they are being monitored.

The real danger to pets are the smaller patches of algae that are not so noticeable. No one would let there dog run into the green water in Lake Erie. Water that has less algae can still be toxic. I hope the word gets out and no more dogs die from a simple summer swim.

I wonder about wildlife. How are they managing? Would they know to avoid the water?
