Migrating salmon make it past Big Bar landslide
#1
Salmon need to return from the ocean and swim up stream to their place of birth so they can spawn. The Fraser river is a major spawning stream. It was discovered that a land slide had occurred making the river impassible to the salmon.
Work has been going on to clear the slide in a way that works for the returning salmon.
Also, they have been catching the salmon and transporting them by helicopter.   So far about 44,000 fish have traveled by helicopter.
Even better, 12,000 have made it on their own.
The salmon runs involve thousands and even millions of fish. If these fish don't make it there will be no salmon in the future.

I commend their efforts in working to save the salmon run.
Even more impressive is the blockage on the Seymore river that prevented the salmon run. The fish were caught by hand and backpacked past the blockage. That is dedication to the survival of the salmon. In the four years since then they have been working to clear the river so the salmon can run on their own.

These rivers are very remote. If you have to actually carry a fish out in a back pack you know the area in isolated. Work to clear the streams is also difficult. If we fail to do this the salmon will not spawn and the numbers will decline and eventually not return at all.

I wonder what the fish think about being back packed and flown by helicopter.
