Twin Pandas born in Berlin Zoo
#1
Most Pandas are not born in the wild. Right now the only hope of species survival is pandas giving birth in zoos.
This time it is Berlin Zoo that has the joy of welcoming panda cubs.  It sounds like mom is doing a good job and we can hope for their survival.

Some of the more endangered species like whooping cranes, condors and prezwalskis horses have survived because of zoo breeding programs. Pandas are just as vulnerable. If we can increase their numbers enough in captivity we can possibly release them back to the wild. Species that were actually extinct in the wild survived because there were a number of them alive in zoos and the zoos set out to increase their numbers. It is slow with pandas. They have one or two cubs and they can go years between pregnancies.  The fact that so many are being born is a sign of hope.

The two pandas visiting Canada produced two cubs while in Toronto and possibly will have cubs while in Calgary.

We can only hope. That would mean Canada received two pandas on loan and will return 4 or 6 pandas. That is a good population increase.
