Calgary Zoo welcomes newborn Masai Giraffe
#1
Calgary Zoo happily welcomed a new born male Masai Giraffe. This baby is special because his mother had trouble carrying a baby to term. The zoo worked with specialists to help Emara. She was given progesterone supplements in her food and they enabled her to give birth to a little calf.

The Masai Giraffe are endangered and there numbers have declined. Having a healthy zoo population is a safety net against extinction. There are a number of species that were saved and returned to the wild because of zoo populations. This calf is important to his species and it is amazing how much they were able to do to help him be born.

Well done Calgary Zoo.
