Annual fish rescue
#1
Every year young fish are washed into irrigation canals in the Calgary area. Once there they cannot return to the river. When the canals are drained and the area freezes in the winter they will die.
Every fall a team of volunteers goes out and collects these fish and returns them to the river.
They save 2000 fish a year. Sadly that is not all of them.
A better solution is to screen the water intake for the canals so fish don't end up in there in the first place.
Since the fish rescue started almost a million fish have been saved and some of the canals have screens to prevent fish from being swept into the canals.

You have to admire the dedication. They have been doing this for 21 years. It is hard work and they know they will be doing it again next year. They know they can't save all the fish. Year after year they go back and save the ones they can. These people are among the quiet heroes of the world who make a difference in the lives of animals. 97
