Thousands of helpful "pets"
#1
People keep red wiggler earthworms in their homes to eat their vegetable scraps. Since they eat anything organic they are easy to feed. In a short time a small number of worms will  turn into many. The end product of eating your vegetable waste is good rich soil.
So they clean up your scraps and they produce soil. That is pretty helpful.

Years ago Toronto had an indoor composter program. They delivered the bin and the soil. Then they mailed the worms to me.
They were great. I really liked them. They ate everything I gave them.  I did some experiments about food preferences.  I put potato peels at one end of the bin and fruit peels at the other. They ate the fruit first.  So earthworms have preferences. I had my funny red wigglers for years and then the colony died out. I have no idea why. Now that I read about this I miss them. Maybe I should get some more worms and set up a new colony. I certainly have lots of vegetable peels from the guinea pigs.
