Endangered turtles stolen from Japanese Zoo
#1
When keepers at the Okinawa zoo went to feed the turtles they noticed that there numbers were low. A search of the area revealed a damaged fence and 64 turtles missing. Gone are 15 Ryukyu leaf  turtles and 49 yellow margined box turtles.  Both species are considered to be Japanese national treasures and they are both critically endangered.
It is feared that they will end up on the black market to be sold as illegal pets.

The fate of each turtle is a great concern. Many will not survive without proper care. Worse these turtles would have been part of a captive breeding program to help the species survive. As black market pets, these turtles and their genetic material are lost to the future of their species. It is not just the loss of 64 turtles, it is the loss of all the future generations that would have come from these turtles.
These thieves have taken more that just  a few turtles. They have taken away many generations of turtles  yet to be born. Their act of theft will have an impact for years. If they are ever caught I hope that is considered when they are  charged. They have stolen now, but they have also stolen from the future.
