Donkey Slaughter in Kenya
#1
A large number of donkeys are being cruelly slaughtered in Kenya. Some of them have been stolen from families who depend on the donkey to survive. The conditions are cruel and unhygienic. The skins are shipped to China to be made into a traditional Chinese medicine. The numbers of donkeys being killed is unsustainable. If it continues the entire donkey population will be gone.

This is a serious problem. It is an animal rights/animal cruelty issue. For that reason alone something needs to be done.

It is also a social issue. Many lives are being disrupted and damaged by the loss of their donkeys. They are part of the economic structure of some communities. Families depend on the income from having a donkey. Without that the people have few resources.

It is an ecological issue. A species is being slaughtered to extinction. The numbers being killed are unsustainable. It is projected that at this rate the donkeys will be gone by 2024. Since the donkeys are part of the current ecosystem it is hard to say what will happen when they are gone. This has not been studied.

This is yet another crisis that humans are creating because of unreasonable demands for something that we have decided is medicinal. In the mean time we let the Amazon Rainforest be destroyed and there are any number of medicinal plants that we could harvest sustainably. We are an unreasonable species.
