21,000 farmed Atlantic Salmon escape into the Pacific Ocean
#1
There has been a fire at a west coast fish farm that has resulted in the release of 21,000 Atlantic Salmon. These Atlantic Salmon are a threat to the wild Pacific Salmon. No one knows what harm they could cause. They have different viruses that the Pacific Salmon would be vulnerable to. They could disrupt the food chain stress the already stressed wild salmon.  The style of fish farming is not safe for the environment. This is not the first fish escape.

This type of fish farming seems like a giant experiment to see what will happen if non native species are released in a key wild salmon area. There is risk that the wild salmon will be further depleted and risk being wiped out.  Since these are farmed fish are  from the Atlantic they will not be able to spawn normally. Who knows what there presence will do.  There are plans to make changes to safer types of pens for farmed fish by the year 2025. Things could be irreversibly damaged by then.  When we have identified a problem and know the solution, why do we delay the solution by years. Why not make the changes now? Why wait until more damage is done?
