Town ends New Years Eve Possum Drop

Yes they were actually marking the new year by dropping a possum in a box. Even if it was done somewhat carefully it was still very traumatic for the possum. Someone in the  North Carolina town started the idea to create an attraction for the town. When the town took it over last year they decided to stop the practice. This was not a long standing tradition. It started in 1990.

I can understand them stopping the possum drop. What I can't understand is starting it in the first place.

I really think we need to take a look at some of our so called traditions that involve animals. Some of them are very strange and many are not very pleasant for the animal involved. I am glad Brasstown decided to do the right thing.
