3 Right Whale calves spotted
#1
This is really good news. They have spotted 3 new Atlantic Right Whale calves in the last few days. This brings the number seen so far this year to nine. That is more than last year and definitely better than 2018 when no calves were born. The right whales have been in a serious decline. There were around  400 of the species with only 100 of them breeding age females. Last year 12 whales were killed.
Nine new babies this year is a hopeful sign.

Efforts have been made to protect the whales. Some areas are off limits to fishing and ship speed limits have been reduced to stop the whales from being injured by collisions with ships. These measures will help, but the real survival of the Right Whales is dependent on their ability to produce calves. This is a hopeful year and if things continue like this we might see the Right Whales make a comeback from the edge.
