A retirement home....for whales
#1
Yes, for Whales. A retirement home has been planned for aging performing whales. They cannot be released to the wild. Some were actually born in captivity. A sheltered bay, 124 miles north of Halifax, has been chosen. The open end will be closed by a net, but the ocean currents will still be able to flow in keeping the water fresh. A team of people will look after the whales and keep them fed.
This gives the whales a chance to live free from small tanks, but also live safely since they lack the survival skills for the open ocean.
People in the Port Hilford area are eager to make this work for the whales.

We brought the whales in from the wild for our own entertainment. We caused whales to be born for our own entertainment.
This is the best we can do for them. We can't make it right after all the years we have exploited these whales, but we can make it better. I can't wait to hear about the first whales arriving in the new sanctuary. I can't wait to see them swim in an open space for the first time. If this sanctuary works then hopefully others can be built so that all captive whales can retire in the peace they deserve.
