When the man found them the kittens were literally frozen to the ice and had been outside far too long. It was out in rural Alberta so
his resources were few. He did have a cup of coffee. When he poured it around the kittens it melted the ice enough for him to free them. He took them home and cared for them and has since found a perfect home for all three to be together.

It was amazing timing and quick thinking. They had been out for a while so they would have frozen to death fairly soon if the man hadn't come along. Using the coffee was creative. Even just warm coffee is enough to melt the ice and free the little kittens tails.
They suffered no lasting harm and how wonderful that they get to spend the rest of their lives together in a happy home.
