Restoring the Bison to the Canadian Prairies
#1
The first Bison calf since 1876, was born this year on the Canadian prairies in Wanuskewin Heritage Park. Once herds of thousands of buffalo roamed. They were hunted almost to extinction by European settlers.
Efforts are being made now to restore buffalo herds. Bison have already been returned to Banff National Park in the Rocky Mountains.
This time it is Saskatchewan that has introduced a herd. Eleven Bison were brought in, some from Yellowstone National Park and some from Grassland National park. On April a calf was born.

The though of Buffalo herds on my beloved prairies bring tears to my eyes. This is a big step to restoring habitats that have been gone for years. Many efforts are being made to restore the natural grasslands of the prairies.

Grassland National Park now has a thriving herd.

It takes a lot to restore a broken ecosystem. The birth of one little calf is a big step in the right direction.
Who knows maybe some day I will go and see the bison out on the prairies. It would be a sight not seen since before my grandmother's time.
It would be like really going home to see my land restored at last.
