Should a shelter have to give public notice of a euthanasia.
#1
The issue of giving public notice of the intent to euthanize an animal has been raised at the San Francisco municipal shelter. Animal advocates propose that the shelter give 48 hours public  notice before euthanizing an animal. This does not apply to an injured animal being euthanized to stop its suffering or a seriously aggressive animal being euthanized as a matter of public safety.  The applies to the healthy animals that just don't find a home in time.

The shelter euthanized 1200 animals last year.  Twenty-five percent were euthanized for a reason. The other 900 were just killed.
Their pictures are posted on adoption pages. If notice were given that the animal was about to be killed, it is hoped that a home would be found or another type of rescue would take responsibility for the pet.

There may be some negatives to the idea, but the results would be less animal euthanizations. Surely that is more important than complications that could be sorted out.

If the idea worked out, then other "kill" shelters could be encouraged to follow their example. It is an idea that could help animals find homes instead of ending their lives. I think it needs to be seriously looked at. I hope the people advocating for this can make it happen.
