Man charged in cruelty case
#1
A dog and cat were found dead in Calgary in Jan, 2014. They have been investigating the case and finally have found the perpetrator.
He is a 19 year old guy and he got the animals off the internet through Kijiji.

Good for the Calgary Humane Society and Calgary Police for not giving up until they found the guy. Even better they did rescue a cat from the guy and save him from a similar fate.

I know the penalty for animal cruelty is not much, but it is still something. It sends a message that animal abusers will be caught.

I just looked at his Facebook page, which is here: https://www.facebook.com/nicolino.camardi

Apparently he is (was?) engaged and still lived with his parents. This is the important point: if he lived with his parents, then presumably the two poor animals were there, too. The parents cannot have failed to see the ill-treatment going on - and did nothing.

As for the young man himself, I hope that he will see the horror of what he has done and sincerely regret his deeds before he passes over - otherwise, he will need to learn the hard way next time....("Karma has his number", as the Noble Knight would say!)

Full credit to the investigative authorities in this case.

I don't know how they ever linked the case back to him. Perhaps someone tipped them off.

I never thought about the fact that he lived with his parents. That means they could have done something to save the animals. I wonder what happened.

What a chilling and terrible crime. Those poor sweet creatures. I am glad a cat was rescued. I can not imagine what could cause someone to do a thing like that. It is seriously sick.
I hope and pray that young man will fully realise what he has done and find some way to do the opposite in what remains of his life.

Shockingly....he looks like any normal, friendly young guy....so chilling.

Something has to be done about the giving away/sale of animals online. I don't know what...

A lot of people are concerned about the internet connection and the giving away of animals on a free site.

I don't know if free animal sites can ever be safely regulated. It would be better to find homes for animals through shelters and rescues.

It is scary how normal he looks. I wonder if acted normally or was there something that did not seem right.

There are some updates here: http://www.calgarysun.com/2014/05/07/law...ychiatrist
and here:

I shall be following this case as it goes through. It would be a tragedy if he were released on bail and allowed to do the same again.

Maybe the giving away, and/or sale of animals online should just simply be made illegal. Except for licensed breeders, who have to display their licence number (or something similar) -and who go through stringent 6-monthly checks by either animal welfare organisations, or even a government body set up for the purpose. Maybe a licence fee (renewable each year, as insurance is) would fund such a venture?

That wouldn't stop everyone of course, laws never do, but it could help a lot.

I am sure there is a way to create such a law and enforce it. People just have to have the will to.

If there are laws in place which force producers of medical products/even herbal products to be licensed and have their products tested before they can sell, then I'm sure something could be done about animals. A new law was passed by the MHRA in the UK in 2010 which made it illegal to manufacture herbal products for sale -online or anywhere -without strict testing. I have no idea what the budget was for that, but it happened, and quite easily.

We have to start putting animals a bit higher on our list of priorities.

I hope they do not turn him loose. He needs to be assessed psychiatrically. Clearly he has problems, but that is no excuse. I am tired of really bad behavior being excused because someone has had a "rough time". We all have rough times in our lives and we do not do unspeakable acts of cruelty.

The judge better do the right thing. Calgarians are very upset about this. Even a five year sentence is not enough. He is already in trouble for hurting women. There is a clear link between abusing animals and abusing humans. So really, protecting animals is also protecting ourselves. Abusers do not distinguish between human and animal so why should the law.

He is a dangerous man and should be treated as such.

Stores that sell animals are inspected regularly. They have to be licenced and they are monitored. I am sure proper breeders would be happy to be licenced as well. The internet is so unregulated, it is no place to sell an animal(or give it away).
There is a lot of work to do to protect animals better under the law. When you look at where things were at in the past we have made progress. sadly progress is usually made after a case like this.

The Crown Prosecutor, Mr Haight says there is no evidence of a pattern of animal abusers obtaining animals online.
http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/an...-1.2634691
I have heard of a few cases, involving Craigslist and other sources (I have forgotten what they were now) But at the very least -which is bad enough -being able to trade animals online gives carte blanche to puppy mills and other unscrupulous dealers. The problem is anyone can say anything online.

I hope that now that poor dog and kitten have left this world, they will find healing, love and help in spirit.
And I hope the young man who did such terrible things can find his way out of that darkness one day and know love in his heart and that it will change him.
I am glad he's going for psychiatric assessment. He is dangerous and very sick.
