Families face tough choices for their pets during the pandemic
#1
Many families have severely diminished incomes during the pandemic. They struggle to meet normal living expenses. If you add in an expensive vets bill they are overwhelmed. Some people just can't afford anything and they have to give up their pet or face euthanizing it. Others make hard choices to come up with money to pay for emergency care.
One family member used her tuition money to help the family cat. That is a tough choice that could have consequences for her future.

Even people who are very financially responsible could not have seen this coming. No one anticipated so many people out of work and so many businesses closed.
Friends and family are also under the same financial stress so they can't help.
Many vets are only partly open. It depends on where you are. Also veterinary services are very expensive. This is a crisis that effects us all in ways we could not have foreseen. Some vets probably have payment plans. Some places would have groups that help people with vets bills. I feel for the people who have no resources who are forced to give up a beloved pet when they need him most because they cannot afford treatment.

This must be a stressful time for vets. They know that the people they are dealing with just can't afford expensive treatments for their pet.  This is just one more thing we have to deal with right now. In every way 2020 has not been good for any of us.

Maybe this would be a good moment to remind visitors and members of the charitable help available to the caretakers of domestic animals who are in financial difficulty:

in the UK: Blue Cross: https://www.bluecross.org.uk/ or RSPCA: https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/team-b...-benefits/

In the USA: Detailed page of help available (originally found by Tobi): https://www.humanesociety.org/resources/...g-your-pet

In France: the SPA: https://www.la-spa.fr/aide-contact/sujet...-que-faire

What about Canada, Catherine?

Maybe we should create a sticky of the help available in various countries?

You are right, we should make the information Sticky.

There are places in Canada that help with veterinary expenses.

https://www.farleyfoundation.org/

I think if I search further I will find more help in other parts of the country. There are people who want to help people and pets in need.

Even if there is help, it would still be very frightening to  have  a veterinary emergency  at a time when you just don't have the money.
I feel for people who are too scared to even look for help. I hope the vets will let people know there is help.

I think the forum would be providing a valuable service by providing a sticky with sources of financial help in various countries. Can I leave it with you to edit/copy/paste, Catherine?

I agree, it would be a real service to people looking for help. I will set that up. Should it be in the general discussion section?

That would work. Or animal charities section.

As long as it is a sticky thread it doesn't matter where it is. I will look at the animal charities section and think about it. I can do this tomorrow during the day.
If I give it a good tittle people should be able to find the thread when they are searching for financial help with vet bills. We can keep adding to it as we find more sites providing help.
