This is a good explanation of the whole groundhog day history and practices.

They are quite right, this day is rooted in astronomy. It is the halfway point between winter and spring. (the solstice and the equinox)  That means every day from now on we are getting closer to spring. We have less winter ahead of us than behind us. Only six more weeks to go and winter is over.
We probably have the worst of the winter weather ahead of us, but the days are getting longer and we can see it. If a furry little rodent wants to promise me an early spring, I will believe him. I will believe him every year even if he is wrong most of the time. I need to hope for spring even when I doesn't really happen until the end of April. Sometimes it comes early doesn't it?
