Pizzlies or Grolars....a climate change solution?
#1
What is a Pizzley or a Grolar? Right now climate change is driving Grizzly Bears north and Polar Bears south. With the ice breaking up and disappearing the Polar bears need to come inland to feed.  The Grizzly Bears are moving further north because of climate change. At some point the two species interact. Instead of competing, they are producing little hybrid bears. These hybrid bears are able to produce offspring.

What we don't know is whether they are more adapted to the changing conditions. If they have certain traits from both species then they will be able to survive better. Will we end up with a third species of bear or will this be a brief interaction. If climate change continues a third species might be the only way the bears survive. If we reverse climate change things could go back to normal or else the third species could establish itself  even more.  Only time will tell.

Whatever happens we have got to do better than calling them Pizzlies or Grolar Bears. If they become a unique species then they need their own name.
This could be a case of climate change fueling an evolutionary change. Survival will go to the most adaptive.  Now it remains to be seen if they are more adaptive.
Polar bears exist because they adapted to life in the extreme arctic climate. If the extreme arctic climate changes then they need to adapt back. They adapted from the grizzly bears half a million years ago, maybe with the grizzly bears help they will adapt back. Only time will tell.
