Taxi driver fined for dumping blind man and his guide dog
#1
A taxi driver picked up a blind man and his dog. After the trip started he demanded an extra fee for the dog. The blind passenger refused to pay because it is an illegal charge. The driver dumped him out on the road, with his dog in an unfamiliar area. He was totally lost and only got home safely because a kind person gave him a ride.
The taxi driver has been fined almost 2000 pounds and could lose his license.

What the driver did was illegal. It was also very dangerous for the blind man. It could have ended very badly for him. As it was it was a traumatic event.
Hopefully the steep fine will make others think before they treat a disabled person so badly. Certainly it will make people think before they discriminate against a guide dog.

From the article:

"In a witness statement, Mr Mills said he felt uncomfortable as Ali gave the impression he 'didn't like dogs', told him to stop Percy 'from looking at him' and 'moaned' about the hound throughout the journey."

Dogs are considered "unclean" by many, but not all, Muslims. There have been previous cases where Muslim taxi drivers have refused to carry guide dogs. You may also recall the case of a bus driver who ordered a blind person with a guide dog off a bus. We discussed it on this forum.

However, in the UK and many other countries, blind people have a legal right to have their guide dog with them on public and private transport. Those who flout that law can expect punishment from the authorities.

The man in this case deserves to lose his licence, as he abandoned a blind man in an unfamiliar area. His guide dog would not know the way home from there. It was callous and dangerous behaviour on the part of the taxi driver.

If the driver felt so strongly about dogs, he should not have started the trip with a blind man. Once he started to transport the man and his dog, he accepted the  responsibility to complete the trip. He should lose his license for what he did.
We trust drivers to take us places. A driver who fails to do that, fails to be a taxi driver.
Anyone who would abandon a blind man in an unfamiliar place should not be working with the public.

I am glad the blind man and his dog made it home safe.
