Restoring Norfolk's wetlands
#1
Jake Fiennes is restoring the  Norfolk wetlands of the Holkham estate. He uses a rotary ditcher to dig trenches  in the areas where water would naturally flow. The muddy ditches provide a natural habitat for wetland birds. Jake has chosen to turn a number of fields into grazing wetlands. These fields are less suitable for farming anyhow. They are more beneficial as a rewilded area. He focuses  on turning unproductive lands  back into natural habitat. The increase in native birds makes the efforts worth while. The farms are also just as productive.

Allowing wildlife a space does not take away from our use of the land.  Jake Fiennes has proven this by his methods. Farms that give some land back to nature remain productive farms. The presence of nature is a benefit. Now we can only hope that the message of what Jake Fiennes has done will spread and other farmers will follow his example.
