Entangled Right Whale gives birth.
#1
Snow Cone the Atlantic Right Whale has been entangled in fishing gear most of the year. She was spotted in March dragging the gear behind her. A number of attempts were made to remove the gear. There are still some ropes trailing from her. Now she has been spotted with a new born calf. Because of the calf they cannot get near enough to work on the ropes she is dragging. The calf seems well, but there is a fear it could become entangled in the ropes its mother is trailing.
For now Snow Cone is being a good mother and carrying on in spite her problems.

She is one tough whale. It is exhausting enough to drag around fishing gear. She has also managed to give birth and look after a new born calf, also a very tiring job. Snow cone is managing to handle both. We just have to hope that it all goes well for Snow Cone. It will be some time before humans can intervene again.

There needs to be a stop to all the fishing gear that is loose in the ocean. I don't know if we can find a way to clean it up. We certainly need to stop letting it end up in the ocean in the first place. Maybe fishing gear needs some kind of tracking devices so it can be collected and removed. No mom should have to give birth while tangled up in someone else's garbage and no baby should be a risk because its mom is tangled up in someone else's garbage.
