Record number of reptile deaths on nature preserve road in 2021
#1
The area of Ojibway Prairie reserve is home to a number of endangered reptiles. Many die on the roads as they attempt to cross to another area. On Oct 12, 2021 a record of 119 snakes were found dead on the road. There are things that could be done, but there is resistance by the local government. Certain roads could be closed when reptiles would be crossing them. A wildlife tunnel could be built. Many animals would use it and live. The speed could be reduced. People could be encouraged to take alternate routes. All that is missing is the will to do these things. Conservationist push ahead to save these species, but they do need some local government cooperation.

So many little things could be done, but the local government hesitates and stalls. Meanwhile hundreds of snakes die on the roads. They are hit by cars that they can't see coming.  Maybe the road through a nature reserve should be closed. It should be reserved for those who have reason to go there and who will be careful not to kill any wildlife. Something has to be done and soon. Spring is coming. Hibernating snakes will be emerging and they need to be able to cross the road safely.
