The cat came back, 11 years later, thanks to a microchip

Fergus the cat went missing, 11 years ago. It was assumed something happened to him. Ninety miles away a rescuer found a cat and checked for a microchip. 
Sure enough it was Fergus and he is home now. He seems happy to be there and finally settle down.

Where has Fergus been for 11 years? Was he living in one place or did he move from home to home?
How could he arrive back at his old home and fit right in? 
He will probably spend the rest of his life in his old home as if he had never left it.
