Ontario Coyote hunting contest
#1
A local hunting supply store sponsors a coyote hunting contest.  They give out prizes for the heaviest coyotes killed. The even give a prize for the smallest coyote killed. That means a 2021 cup will be killed.
The annual contest was started in 2018 so it is not a long standing local tradition.

The contest was started by the hunting goods store and they charge a fee to enter the contest. They also sell the supplies needed to hunt  coyotes. Do I sense a conflict of interest here. The store stands to gain from the contest even though they are giving out prizes. If they encourage more people to hunt, they will sell more hunting equipment.

The contest is probably in violation of Ontario law. So why is it allowed?
They claim it protects the deer population, but I don't think the deer are in danger because of coyotes.
The deer are more in danger because of hunters.
There is a petition out there trying to get this stopped.

It seems this made desire to kill for fun is everywhere.
It is a particularly nasty time of the year for a hunt. It is bitterly cold and the snow is deep. Animals of all kinds are struggling to survive. Now they have a hunt to contend with. Humans are not the easiest species to live with.

From the article you cited, Catherine:

" 'The main purpose of this event is to help control the predators that threaten our deer population and have some fun doing it,' the store wrote".

Have some fun.....killing animals. This is not hunting for food; this is not even hunting to control alleged predators (as claimed). Their own words betray them: fun killing animals.

This is appalling in the extreme. I hope that this disgusting competition is stopped. It shows humanity at its near-lowest.

We can hope that this competition is stopped, but we have been fighting it each year it has taken place. Some protected wolves will be killed by mistake, but that won't stop it. There are too many people out there who still think killing is fun. That is a very disturbing thought.

It is probably not the worst hunt in Ontario. The spring bear hunt is worse.

This is a pro-hunting site offering hunting trips. It gives you an idea of the mind set of the hunters. It is an adventure trip for them.

This is the reality. Baby bears are orphaned each spring when their mothers are killed. They put out bait to attract hungry bears and shoot them when they come to feed.

This is yet another disgusting event that shows humans at their lowest.
Is there any other species on the planet that is so horrible?

To be honest, I don't think there is any other species so horrible. Cats sometimes "play" with mice before killing them, but that is only one at a time and not organised, mass killing like these horrible killing competitions or mass hunts.

At a risk of (temporarily) shifting the topic, cats do not actually play with rats and mice for fun; it is actually a genetic instinct to kill cautiously. There is an explanation here (it is necessary to read all the way down to "Why doesn't she just kill the poor mouse?"):

So it looks like humans are the only species to organise competitions to kill other species just for fun....

I have lived with cats and I agree with the article. Cats are independent and if they relate to us it is as independent beings.
They don't look up to us. We are lucky they don't look down on us.
They take time to kill their prey because they are small hunters.  They can't risk getting injured.

We are still the only species that organizes killing contests and give out prizes for killing animals that we cannot use in any way.

I have hopes that we will improve. There are good people setting good examples. However when I read about a coyote killing contest I fear we have a very long way to go.
