The iguanas that live behind the Tampa Bat SPCA
#1
There are ten iguanas living in an enclosure behind the Tampa Bay SPCA. They were taken in March 2020. In February 2021, they became a prohibited species.
Only people who already have Iguanas will be allowed to keep them. It is now legal and even encouraged for people to capture and kill iguanas all year round.
The ten iguanas are safe as long as they live in their enclosure behind the SPCA. Any new iguanas that are surrendered must be euthanized by law.
The ten will get to live out their lives because they arrived at the shelter before the law changed.

This is another sad case of an invasive species. Iguanas do not belong in Florida. There are no natural predators to control their numbers. They do a lot of damage to local vegetation and outcompete local species. They are a large lizard so they have a lot of impact. It is just sad that the lucky ten get to live, but the rest have been sentenced to death. They can be killed by anyone at all. I am glad the ten are being kept alive. They represent all the iguanas who didn't ask to be there and don't deserve to die. Controlling the iguana problem should be done much more humanely. Maybe there need to be many sanctuaries set up to control the iguanas and prevent more hatchings. Anything would be better than an automatic death sentence.
