Canadian researcher working to end animal testing
#1
Dr Chandrasekera  founded the Canadian Centre for Alternatives to Animal Methods. She started questioning the purpose of research being done on animals.
Too many drugs passed animal trials and later failed in humans. So she asked how many drugs that failed animal testing would have worked in humans.
She questioned the method of inducing something in animals that resembles a human disease, but isn't that disease.
She questioned the whole animal testing methodology if it doesn't give results.

If we want results that work on humans, we need to use human models. There are a number of ways to do this. As we move research in this direction we will find methods that give real results.
If Dr Chandrasekera's lab can produce real alternative methods to animal testing and produce some real results in their research, then there is no further excuse for other labs to keep using animals. It is becoming a matter of stubborn adherence to past methods. It is the old, but we have always done it this way argument.
Even scientists can get stuck in the past.

I am so glad that you posted this, Catherine. It echoes many discussions which we have had on this forum on this very topic. Progress is taking place, albeit slowly.

There is definitely progress. Some day they will have such good methods that animal testing would be unthinkable.
