24 year sentence for man who started the fire that killed a dozen Condors
#1
Wildfires are tragic, but when they are deliberately set they are something far worse. The Dolan fire burned 124,000 acres and destroyed the Condor Sanctuary. Twelve birds were killed, others were injured. The nest sites were ravaged by the fire. Some of the chicks, like Iniko, survived. We watched him in the nest until the fire destroyed the web cam.  Some chicks died in their nests. They were too young to fly and they were totally helpless as the fire approached.
Many other animals would have died in this fire. Countless trees were lost. Fires happen, but this one was deliberate. Angry
The arsonist faced a number of charges, in particular, 12 counts of animal cruelty. He was convicted and has been given a 24 year sentence.

It is important that he was charged and convicted for each bird he killed. It acknowledges the lives of these birds as unique and worthy of recognotion.
The Condor Sanctuary is being rebuilt and the conservation program will go on. These twelve birds however, are gone forever. The arsonist killed members of an endangered species and that puts the species at risk. He also caused pain and suffering to the birds that died. The chicks in the nests never stood a chance.
I hope he things about that during his years in prison.
