Tortoise thought to be extinct, found on Galapagos Island.
#1
Fernandina Island is a rough volcanic island. In 1906 a male loner tortoise was found. None have been seen since, until now. A female loner tortoise has been found. Now they are searching the island for others of her species. The female Fernanda is about 50 years old and they confirmed her identity with DNA.
She could be the last of her species or she could be the beginning of a breeding program to bring the species back.

One thing we know for sure is that 50 years ago there were at least 2 tortoises. If Fernanda has been unseen all these years then there is hope that there are others. I like to believe that there are others and the species can be saved. Even one good clutch of eggs could turn things around for the species.
