Catnip does more than we realize.
#1
When cats chew on catnip and roll on it they get pretty high. They also cause the plant to release mosquito repellant.
So catnip has more than one purpose for cats. Catnip protects cats from mosquitos.

Cats know more than we realize. They use natural insecticides. There are other species that use natural insecticides. Birds and other animals use citrus leaves.
I have used orange peel. The oil in it repels biting insects.

So we have learned this about cats. What other animals are using natural remedies and repellants. We could learn a great deal by just observing animals.
The plant world has so much to offer. Many species of animals have figured this out.  We could learn from them.

Some cats don't respond to catnip and others end up lying on the floor in a drooling mess.
I wonder if it would still work to repel mosquitoes even if the cats don't care about it.
Does catnip work to repel mosquitoes for humans? It would be worth trying.

With Bessie and Edward was it dried catnip you tried or was it fresh picked leaves. It could make a difference.
