Poop Power
#1
If you have even one pet, you know they produce a lot of poop. Can you imagine how much poop the Toronto Zoo produces.
Think 500-600 pounds of poop a day. That is a lot of brown stuff and it seemed wasteful to just throw it out.
Ten years ago a project was started called ZooShare. The manure is collected and taken to a facility where it is put in a biodigester along with food waste.
The result is biogas that can be used to power 250 homes a year. The leftover sludge is used as fertilizer.
This is part of the Zoo's sustainability plan.

This is the ultimate repurposing project. The mounds of poop the zoo produces, become power that can help run the zoo. There is hope that the project can be expanded. They certainly are not likely to run out of poop.

This whole idea could be expanded to include bathroom waste and anything else that could make biogas. There is no need to throw stuff out when when can use it.
