Alberta Wolfdog rescue seeks to expand

The Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary in Alberta is starting a fund raising campaign so they can expand their facilities. They have just taken in 7 more wolf dogs and housing everyone just became more complicated. Wolfdogs require a lot of outdoor space.

Wolfdogs are hybrids between wolves and dogs. As such, they do not make good pets.

I had just planned to post an article about a sanctuary doing fund raising. When I started doing a bit of background checking I found a lot of information about wolf dogs. They all agree that crossing a wolf with a dog is not a good idea. The offspring are not able to live in the wild. They are also not able to live a fully domesticated life. We are creating an animal that cannot live comfortably anywhere. Wolfdog sanctuaries are the closest thing to a suitable placement for these creatures. Yes they are beautiful. There is a certain appeal to having a pet wolf. I believe they were made popular by the show Game of Thrones. 
The reality is an animal who can't fit in. It seems many end up being euthanized because their owners can't handle them. We need to stop deliberately breeding these hybrids. We are not doing it for good reasons, it is being done to make money. The results are not good. Too many people who buy a wolfdog do not do enough research so they are unprepared for what they have actually purchased.  I don't know what can be done to stop wolfdog breeders, but something needs to be done. Too many animals are suffering because we have a crazy idea about a pet wolf.
