Outrage after Monarch Butterfly field mowed
#1
A patch of land near Trudeau Airport has been allowed to grow wild since 2012.  It has flourished. It is now home to many birds, insects and small mammals. In particular there is a lot of milkweed, the one plant that feeds Monarch caterpillars. Right now there would be Monarch eggs and caterpillars. There would be nesting ground birds. It wasn't just vacant land.
Sadly the company that owns the land sees it differently. They didn't designate it as a Monarch Butterfly site so in their minds it isn't a Monarch Butterfly site.

I could cry when I think of the number of animals that will have suffered because of this thoughtless action. It is thoughtless and it is ignorant.
They really didn't look at the land and what is happening there. In 12 years it has reverted to wild or rather it has become healthy, natural land again.
The company involved, like so many others has become blind to the natural world around them.

The loss of this one field is heartbreaking, but what it implies about the people who did it is scary. They are disconnected from the natural world around them.
They can't see the natural world around them, but they are the ones who are making decisions about how that land is used or abused.
We need to find a way to reconnect people with the Earth before they do worse things.
Right now the planet needs saving from climate change and all the many things we have done to it. It seems that first we need to convince people that the planet matters. People won't work to save what they don't care about.
