UK pheasant shoots scaled back because of bird flu risk
#1
Just under 50 million pheasants are released each year for hunting. These birds are imported from Europe where they are bred on farms for the purposes of hunting. There have been bird flu outbreaks in Europe, so importation of birds has to be restricted. The risk to local bird populations in just to great.
Some local bird shoots will be greatly reduced. Some shoots will be cancelled all together.

It is sad that it is taking bird flu to reduce the pheasant shoots, but it is still good news that they are being reduced.
The idea that 50 million  birds are bred just to be released and killed is appalling. We are not even raising them for food. Their purpose is to be killed for sport.
How twisted is that?
Bird flu is showing up the flaws in our system of commercial breeding of birds. Such intense farming methods lead to outbreaks of viruses.
We need to review how birds are being raised. We should be thinking about why they are being raised as well.

Excellent news that fewer pheasants will be slaughtered this year, even if bird flu is the reason.

Maybe this will be the beginning of the end for importing birds for hunting. If we don't want to be constantly fighting epidemics we need to change how we do many things. This is definitely one thing that needs to change.

I wish the hunt would stop because people realize it is not a good thing. I will settle for it stopping to prevent bird flu.
