Spix Macaws returned to the wild after 20 year absence
#1
The Spix Macaws have not just been absent from the  wild for two decades and they were declared extinct two years ago. This is the bird that inspired the 2011  movie Rio.
Even though they were gone from the wild there were still birds in captivity. These birds became part of a breeding program to save the species. It has been successful.

Brazil has created a nature preserve for them and eight birds have been released. Twelve more will join them soon. So far they are settling in beautifully. They are starting to eat wild foods and are staying together as a group.
The Spix Macaw is back and thriving and so are the other species that can live with them in the nature preserve.
When one species benefits many more also benefit.

This is a wonderful "back from extinction" story. It would have been very easy to give up and let them go. When we choose to act we can do amazing things.
We just need to repeat this around the globe for many species. We also need to set aside much more land for nature preserves.  Every country needs to do this.
I think every success story like this can serve as an inspiration and encouragement for other countries to act. Every conservation effort helps all of us in the end.
It certainly helped a pretty blue parrot like the Spix Macaw.
