Galapagos Tortoises hunted and killed for their meat.
#1
It is feared that Galapagos Tortoises are being hunted and killed for their meat. Four dead tortoises have been found this year. Fifteen bodies were found last year.
Hunting and killing Galapagos Tortoises was banned in 1933, but it seems like the practice has started again illegally.
Last year 185 tortoise hatchlings were found inside a suitcase at the airport. Sadly 10 of them had died.
Tortoise numbers have declined by over 85% since the 1800s. Hunting and trafficking them further endangers them and puts them at risk.
They are protected, but hunting a tortoise only brings a 3 year sentence, if convicted.

Can't we leave anything alive? These are the tortoises made famous by Darwin. Surely we can let them live. Not everything on this planet is food for us.
They are going to have to do better than three years as a penalty if they are going to stop this. Of course there would be no market for trafficked meat if people stopped eating it. We need to stop people from eating the tortoises. We need to make them not want to eat them.
