Canada to ban importation of dogs from a number of countries
#1
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is set to ban dog imports from many countries at the end of Sept 2022. They are concerned about the risk of importing dog rabies. It is a different strain of rabies than the one we normally see. It is a very real concern, but totally banning imports is a drastic response.

This puts vulnerable dogs in certain countries at greater risk. Finding them homes will be almost impossible. Canada is one of the places that has been able to take in large numbers of dogs. These dogs will be left roaming the streets in their own countries. This will increase the chances of rabies spreading.
In the end we are more at risk if there is more rabies in the world.  Working to bring in many street dogs and care for them would benefit all of us.
We could insist on quarantines periods and vaccinations to make things safer.
A ban will just cause a lot of hardship for dogs elsewhere.
It is disappointing that Canada is going to do this.
I don't think it can be stopped. Perhaps it can eventually be lifted, at least for some countries.
