Ojibwe Spirit Horses
#1
Ojibwe Spirit Horses are a small breed of horse that was mainly found in western Ontario. DNA testing shows that they are different from the breeds of horses introduced by the Europeans. Sadly, the push to colonize the land nearly drove them to extinction. The last four mares were to be killed in 1977. In the dark of night, they were smuggled across the lake into the USA. A farm in Minesota kept them and bred them to an Arabian horse. Their numbers have increased, and some horses have been returned to Canada. They are gradually being returned to their land and to the Ojibwe people who have cared for them for centuries.

The story of the horses is linked to the stories of the people.

As the horses grow stronger in numbers so do the people who are linked to them.

There are even some in Manitoba now.

I would be interested to know where they genetically come from. I would like to know how many centuries they have been in Canada.
This is going to take more research.
