Battle over Pit Bull ban in South Africa
#1
South Africa is about to impose a Pit Bull ban. This is in response to people being injured and killed by Pit Bulls.
The Pit Bull Federation of South Africa has created a counter petition to fight the ban
They rightly claim, the problem in not the breed, but the owners. The real problem is the backyard breeders who cross the pit bulls and create a more aggressive breed. Pure bred Pit Bulls are not aggressive and should not be banned.

Everywhere that has pit bull bans has the same problems. The people who breed the dogs are responsible for the way the dogs turn out. The Dogs are usually fine around people, if they have been raised right. The bans did not stop dog attacks. Poorly bred and poorly raised dogs will always be a problem. Letting people think they are safe because the one "bad breed" has been banned is a mistake. Other breeds can be just as dangerous, and they sometimes are.
Breed specific bans give people a false sense of security. In some ways that makes the risk of being bitten much worse after a breed ban.

I hope South Africa finds a better way to deal with this problem.
