Remembering Laika, the Soviet Space Dog
#1
On Nov 3, 1957, the USSR launched Sputnik 2. On board was Laika, a cosmonaut dog. She had been a stray, but she was brought into the space program.
She was the first earth creature to be sent into orbit. She survived the launch, but the capsule was not designed to keep her cool. She orbited the earth but lived less than two hours.
No plans had been made for her return. It was always expected that she would die in space.

It is good that we should remember Laika. She did her part, but humans failed to provide for her safety and survival.
It wasn't intended that she would die so soon. They wanted to collect more data. The did intend to let her die though.
She wasn't even a volunteer. No doubt what Laika did helped our understanding of space travel. We need to remember her as we move forward in our space exploration. What we do now rests on the sacrifice of a little 6 kg dog called Laika. RIP Laika.
