The World Cup is due to begin in Qatar this month. Paws Rescue Qatar is claiming that stray cats and dogs are being rounded up and killed before the event. Qatar does have a bad reputation for mistreating strays. Many people's pets are being rounded up at the same time. The animals are not being seen again.
Pest control companies have been authorized to clear the streets of strays. There is little control over how they are doing it.

This kind of stray animal round up seems to occur before major sports events. Remember the winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. They were rounding up stray dogs to kill them. There was a real fight to save those dogs.
Maybe we need to look at how sports events are rewarded and where they are located. If killing strays is likely to be part of the preparation a country should not be allowed to host the event.
