Humpback Whale migrates with severe spinal injury
#1
Moon, the Humpback Whale, has made the full migration from BC to Hawaii. This is exceptional because her spine was injured, possibly by a boat strike.
Her tail is immobile, so she used her pectoral fins to swim. It would have been very tiring. Sadly they don't think she will survive to make the return trip.

Boat strikes are very serious for whales. Four Humpback Whales have been found dead this year. Two of them had injuries consistent with boat strikes.
It is possible that Moon is pregnant. Her calf would not survive without her. So, if she dies of her injuries, it would be two whales that are lost.

We need to learn to share the oceans with whales and dolphins and porpoises. We need to learn to share. Ocean creatures already share the space with each other.
We are the ones that have to learn.

When whales die their bodies sink so we may never know what has happened to  Moon if she dies. She just might never be seen again.
