PETA takes legal action against UK Army
#1
PETA has been is a dispute with  the British Army over its use of bear skin hats. Yes it has been the tradition for many years to use bear skin, but PETA has produced a synthetic substitute that would work just as well. It has no animal products in it and it is every bit as good as a bear skin hat. No bears have to die to produce the synthetic hat.

The army was going to at least test it, but now they are refusing to even try.
So PETA is going to try legal action to at least get them to try the new hats.

These bear skin hats seem like yet another so called tradition that we hang on to for no good reason.
Why do they need hats made from bear skin? What possible military significance could the bear skin have.
Are the people they guard safer because their hats are actual animal skins. Would they be in more danger if the guards wore synthetic hats?
We know the answer to those questions. There is no good reason to keep using animal skins.
Wouldn't it make more sense to go cruelty free.  We hang on to the strangest as if they really matter.

Conservation efforts and protecting Canadian Black Bears are things that do matter. A soldier isn't a soldier because of the hat he wears.
He might be a better soldier if he showed compassion to animals and concern about the ecology of the country he protects.

I agree totally. Tradition has been used as an excuse for all sorts of cruelty over many centuries.

This is one of the sillier traditions. It is a hat. Who cares what it is made out of. Why should a beautiful black bear die for a hat.
